As long as I can remember, I have been admiring the art of fine jewelry. My list of favorite jewelers is endless and diverse, ranging from Lalaounis gold ancient Greek designs to De Beers diamond rings. I like everything and anything with an interesting design combined with high quality craftsmanship. The beauty and the elegance of jewelry made by Cartier, Harry Winston, Boucheron, Bulgari always make me dream. In Turin, Italy where I was traveling often with my father for business I saw the most amazing jewelry store, Fasano. Mario Fasano and his wife designed and produced detailed nature inspired motifs usually flowers and animal. Not too many years ago, I used to have a big dossier filled with pictures of beautiful jewelry I collected from magazines and brochures, now I have a huge picture file in iphoto and long list of bookmarks with jewelry related sites in my computer.

It was very hard to avoid making my article the size of a coffee table book! Having in mind that the only purpose of jewelry is to look appealing, I reduced, my quite long list to contemporary jewelers with gorgeous designs that appealed to my emotions.
Jewelry History

- Renne Fleming with Ilias Lalaounis Earrings
The first signs of jewellery came from Africa where perforated beads made from snail shells were found, dating up to 75,000 years. Around 7,000 years ago, copper jewellery were seen but the first signs of established jewellery making was in Ancient Egypt around 5,000 years ago.The Egyptians preferred the luxury, rarity, and workability of gold over other metals and jewelry symbolized power in the community, worn by wealthy Egyptians in life and in death.
The Greeks started using gold and gems in jewellery in 1600 BC, although beads shaped as shells and animals were produced widely in earlier times. By 300 BC, they had mastered making coloured jewellery and using amethyst, pearl and emeralds. Jewellery in Greece was worn only on special occasions and public appearances. It was frequently given as a gift and was predominantly worn by women to show their wealth, social status and beauty. In the 1960s, international recognition of the Hellenic jewelry culture was brought by famous Greek jewelers Zolotas and Lalaounis. By reproducing and reinventing ancient designs they promoted a purely Greek style that celebrities such as Elisabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and the Kennedys sought for.
Stefan Hafner

I first saw, Stefan Hafner’s work in one of my favorite Greek jewelry stores,
Kessaris. It was Christmas and I was looking for something special. It had to be contemporary but at the same time would it should withstand the test of time. I was dazzled by the vast selection of jewelry but almost everything I liked was designed by Stefan Hafner. I am still very happy with my choice. However, I still remember a black rose pendant I saw in Turkey in the jewelry shop inside Ciragan Hotel I did not get. Now I realize his designs, can haunt you forever.

Minas

The essence of his designs is simplicity, form and harmony. Minas explains: “Harmony pre-exists in everyone of us since each of us hides within himself the need for harmony”. He was born in 1938 in Athens and from a very young age knew exactly what he wanted to be. At 15, he trained as a goldsmith and at 30 he moved to the United States.

He lived and worked for 11 years in New York city and established his presence as a jewelry designer. He never uses any stones, his creations are amazing jewelry made solely of solid gold or silver. In 1980, he moved back to Athens where he began a limited production of personally signed pieces and opened his store in the island of Mykonos which is a work of art.
Yossi Harari

I noticed, the Israeli jeweler, Yossi Harari when I saw a picture of an amazing ring called "The Wild Rose". He had just won the first place in the Haute Couture category at the “ Couture Las Vegas Show”, in 2009. The winning ring, is handcrafted out of 24 karat gold and "gilver", a combination of 25 percent gold and 75 percent silver alloy, giving a signature black, oxidized hue. In addition to a large, 97.25 carat fire opal, the ring contains a total of more than 120 carats of gems, namely sapphires, emeralds, and cognac diamonds.
Harari has carved out a reputation for melding together designs of Byzantine and Etruscan origin in his own modern and unique style. When he was eleven, re-designing a diamond ring for his mother set him on a course from which he has never wavered. He went on to receive formal training and degrees in Gemology and Jewelry Design from The Gemological Institute of America in Los Angeles and in History of Arts from Tel Aviv University. In 1992, Yossi opened his atelier in Istanbul, where his works are still being created. Yossi's designs, crafted from a variety of metals, are inspired by the spectacular influences of the region from which he comes.
La Reina

- La Reina Earrings
Jewelry designer Samir Bhansali, was born in Mumbai, India. A country with a rich art heritage, where emerald, ruby and sapphire colored embroidered silk saris are paired with equally extravagant gem stones. India is among the countries that gave birth to the idea that jewelry is for every woman on every occasion. Attention to detail is the hallmark of La Reina's innovative, award-winning work. By mixing ancient with innovative techniques the pieces have no backside are stunning from every angle.

Bransali has lived in Los Angeles, where La Reina is headquartered for the past 27 years. Evoluzione is my favorite collection of jewelry pieces made of titanium. As an ultra-lightweight virtually indestructible material, titanium can be sculptured into enormous elaborate pieces that otherwise would be unwearable. Imagine earrings the size of orchid blossoms that are as light a hollow gold hoops.
Stephen Webster

Stephen Webster is one of the leading British figures in the fine jewelry and silver design industries. Webster's keen eye for detail, expert craftsmanship and glam-rock attitude has given way to dramatic creations with an eternally chic aesthetic. He is a three time winner of the "British Luxury Jeweller of the Year" award and winner of " UK Jewellery Brand of the Year" in 2008. Originating from a modest background, Stephen Webster has evolved to a powerful global luxury brand with over 120 points of sale worldwide. He continues to build his high profile celebrity following culminating in an alliance with musical artist Christina Aguilera who appears in the brand's new advertising campaign. His nature based designs brought him recognition from Hollywood celebrities and I believe, they offer a true lifestyle experience.
David Yurman

- David Yurman Ring
Although, I noticed David Yurman’s stylish campaigns with Kate Moss, I admired his collections from a distance, mainly because the store is located next to the shoe gallery at Neiman Marcus in Fashion Valley Mall, and I get carried away. However, when I saw Julia Roberts in a photograph promoting her film "eat pray love" wearing in her index finger a very fine ring with a diamond heart, I started exploring the brand. I bought the heart ring in August in California and I never take it off! A native New Yorker, sculptor David Yurman, along with his wife Sybil, a potter, formed what has become one of America's quintessential American jewelry brands in 1980. Their contemporary style is relaxed and fashionable with an underlying interest in both the balance and harmony of design. The closeness of their personal and professional partnership is reflected in the sensuality of line and form, often displayed by their signature motif, the cable, which launched in 1982.
Ileana Makri

- Ileana Makri Earrings
I met Ileana Makri, late 1990s, in her trendy women's clothing shop, Mageia, in Athens. I was in the candle making business at that time and while I was waiting for paraffin to melt, I experimented with fashion jewelry using feathers and beads. She liked my designs, sold a few but I still remember her advice which was, to pay attention to details. She had just launched, her eponymous jewelry line using mostly gold, diamond and other precious stones.

- Ileana Makri
Her designs brought her both fame and recognition and attracted elite clientele from Hollywood celebrities to Europe's finest families.Today Uma Thurman, Heidi Klum and Ashley Olsen to name a few are among her clients.
Inspired by her Greek heritage and extensive travels, Makri's designs hold a particular fascination with religious and mythological iconography: "Symbols have a broad, universal appeal that crosses cultures", explains the designer. She spends her time between London, Paris and New York where she gathers inspiration for her stunning collection.
